FAQ's

Q: I 've lost my pet. How do I find him?
A: Always check with the shelter, 837-2989, and then KEEP checking. Also, send an email to us and we can post it on our Lost & Found page. Include the following information; a full description of pet (species, size, color, sex), name, collar, when and where pet was lost, and a picture if possible. You may also want to run an ad in the local papers and notify the local radio stations. You may also want to check with the local vets to see if someone has brought in an injured animal. Flyers with a picture of your pet are also a great way of getting people to look. Pets can be missing for weeks and still be found, so don't give up.

Q: I know of a dog (cat, etc) that is being abused or neglected.
A: Notify the shelter as soon as possible, 837-2989 or the McDonough County Sheriff's office, 833-2323. You may need to check back with the shelter to find out the status of the situation. Also, read our Tips for Reporting Abuse in McDonough County and the ASPCA's Tips for Determining and Reporting Abuse. If the situation persists, please contact our Humane Society President.

Q: There are dogs (cats, etc) running loose in my neighborhood.
A: Notify the animal control officer at the McDonough County Animal Shelter, 837-2989, or local law enforcement.

Q: I've found an injured raptor. What do I do?
A: We are lucky to have a Raptor Rehabilitation Center in Quincy, the only facility of its kind within a 100-mile radius. Click here to see their instructions for handling injured birds.

Q: I have bats in my belfry, attic (and other wildlife encounters). What do I do?
A: Problems with wildlife are not so simple. The Animal Control Officer at the Shelter is not licensed to handle or trap wildlife. (Coons, Opposums, Squirrels, etc. are considered wildlife). They will provide live traps for people to use. There is a refundable deposit of $10.
Or you can contact the McDonough County Sheriff's Office, 833-2323

Q: My pet needs surgery and I will need help with my vet bill.
A: Before your pet has the surgery, discuss with your vet the option of using the Angel Fund. Each of the local vets can access a fund set up through the HSMC called the Angel Fund.  This has been set up to assist individuals with unexpected or expensive veterinary procedures.

Q: My pet needs to be spayed or neutered.
A: The HSMC provides spay/neuter assistance for low-income families (150% of low-income, see chart). If you think you may qualify, please send proof of income information (block out SSN and personal info) to HSMC, PO Box 7, Macomb, IL 61455. You will then receive a voucher for $35 only off the procedure. We cannot pay the full bill.

Q: I want to volunteer for the Humane Society.
A: Great!! The HSMC meets monthly (see calendar) at Spoon River College in Macomb. Everyone is welcome to attend. Or email the HSMC President. We'd love to hear from you.
