Humane Society of McDonough County Mission Statement
The purpose of this Society is the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals, and the extension of humane education.
It is the policy of the Society: to seek humane care and treatment for all animals needing protection in the area served by the Society; to seek to return lost animals to their owners; to seek suitable homes for animals without owners and to provide education on the humane treatment of animals.
The Society shall maintain accepted minimum standards which shall be representative of those prescribed by recognized humane organizations, such as the Humane Society of the United States.
Every year, we work to improve the lives of many animals here in McDonough County. Perhaps you have seen our information table out engraving pet tags, or brought your pet to our annual pet wash. Other community services we provide are:
Each year, the McDonough County Animal Shelter (NOT to be confused with the
Humane Society) must put to sleep approximately 700-800 cats and dogs due to the
ongoing overpopulation problem. Our efforts hope to decrease those numbers
through public awareness, education and active participation within the
community. We wish to do more; however, this means the need for an increase in
funds from donations, memorials, and, of course, membership. Our animal friends do not have the voices to make their concerns
known. So often, animals suffer due to neglect and maltreatment. We have chosen
to speak for them and to try to provide them with the care they deserve. Our goal this coming year is to increase our membership to 500 so that we may
have the manpower, as well as the financial support, to do more to benefit the
animals than ever before! We do not feel this is out of the question. Without
people, the Humane Society cannot continue. We have room for many different types of members - members that have ideas,
members that can donate their time at fundraisers, or members who may just wish
to be silent and give financial support. We encourage participation, but if you
cannot be active, that is fine too. Won't you please help us out?As a member, you will receive our newsletter, "Waggin' Tales", which will
keep you up-to-date on our organization's activities and progress. Your
membership will also be helping out with fees and promoting adoptions at the
County Shelter (whom we work closely with, but are separate from) and in
essence, you will be saving little lives! Won't you please join our
organization? We welcome you, and remember...it is for the animals!NOTE: The Humane Society is NOT kept informed of the status of the
animals promoted, so, if you have questions regarding the animals, please call
the McDonough County Animal Shelter at (309) 837-2989.
Sincerely,
