Make Adoption Your First Option!

This website is possible thanks to the Humane Society of McDonough County Poster Committee.
The HSMC works diligently to promote adoption of the animals available at the McDonough County Animal Shelter,
although the facility itself operates on County funds and is staffed by employees through County dollars.
The HSMC does not have independent access to the shelter nor the authority to arrange adoptions.

Shelter News:

The McDonough County Animal Shelter needs Dog Food and Kitten Litter.

The Animal Shelter is currently in desparate need of Cat Litter! Due to an overwhelming increase in cats picked up and/or left at the shelter this past month, litter has become a priority need. Please consider donating and also help to promote spaying and neutering of cats in any way you can!

For the animals coming through the McDonough County Animal Shelter, Heartworm tests and some initial vaccinations, including Bordetella and Distemper, are provided. These are important initial steps to ensure healthy animals but keep in mind if you are considering adopting from the Shelter, you will need to complete the following:

  • Have your pet examined by a veterinarian and arrange for any remaining vaccinations to be completed. Pets older than 4 months must have a rabies vaccination and registration with the county. This is state law.
  • Have your pet's stool analyzed for parasites and treated as needed.
  • Begin heartworm prevention immediately. A second heartworm test in 6 months is recommended.
  • Arrange for spay/neuter, if not already done. This is part of your contract with the Shelter.

What to do when a Stray Finds You!
First of all, try to find and reunit the 'stray' with his owner. Contact the shelter to see if anyone has reported their pet missing. Check the newspapers and radio stations. And most important, have the stray checked for a microchip. This can be done at your vets office or at the shelter.
Keep in mind, if this 'stray' was actually your beloved pet, wouldn't you want the person who found him to try everything possible to find you?
For more information, call 837-2989.

Volunteers are needed on Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. to work with dogs and cats to imporve their chances of adoption.
Volunteers should be 16 years or older, or accompanied by an adult.
Working with the shelter animals can be a fun and rewarding opportunity!
